Ministry of Education - External Credits Program Survey

Hi Everyone:

The Ministry of Education has asked that we circulate their survey regarding External Sport Credits to our membership. It would be good if you could take a few minutes (literally, a few minutes) and complete the survey, and following is an explanation. The link to the survey is http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/openschoolbc/external-credentials-program-survey-1/

The Ministry of Education, along with its education partners, is working to redesign the Grades 10-12 curriculum to help ensure students are learning in a way that connects them to the collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills that are so important after high school.

As part of this transformation, the Ministry is also undertaking a review of the External Credentials Program to ensure alignment with the broader changes in the curriculum, such as the principle of flexibility. As well, we would like to assess stakeholders' familiarity with the EC program in British Columbia and gauge the value and accessibility of the program.

We hope to reach many of our stakeholders, so we invite you to share the following survey with your current and former students, parents, and colleagues:

http://fluidsurveys.com/surveys/openschoolbc/external-credentials-program-survey-1/

The survey will remain open until November 30, 2016. Results will inform our review of the EC Program and recommendations for future program design, which will be communicated next year.

Regards,
Rochelle

You, as the parent, must be in attendance at the end of the meeting as we draw.  If not, we will draw for another name.  Total of 1 (one) free registration will be drawn for.
  2. Door prizes. Through some very generous donations, we are pleased to let you know that there will be door prizes drawn from the AGM sign in entries as well!
  3. Awards and Recognition. Awards for the Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player / Most Inspirational Player per team will be presented, as will those for Head Coach, Assistant Coach of the Year, Senior Ref and Junior Ref of the Year.  Any other special recognitions and announcements will be made as well to highlight achievements and service within the Association.
  4. Request to the Membership to consider filling vacancies on the Board, and for volunteers willing to assist with other specific events within the following season. We are entering a year of transition and are looking to fill the Treasurer, Secretary, Registrar positions as well as Equipment Manager.  Other opportunities are available as well, and all input is welcome.  Should you know of someone in the community who may not have a child playing, but who is looking to be a volunteer as part of a growing association, please see a board member prior to or at the AGM.

Mid Island U15s Bring Home Hardware

Mid Island Lightning U15 Tier 2 had success in the BC Field Lacrosse Provincials in Langley on February 5 - 8, 2016.

The team didn't get off to the start they wanted but were able to win their third round-robin game to have an even record of 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie.

The medal tiering game was a nail-biter as it took overtime to decide what medal the Lightning team was going to play for.

The bronze medal game was the most lop-sided for the team in the tournament to seal the bronze medal.

See the Cowichan Valley Citizen article for the full story by clicking the following link: http://www.cowichanvalleycitizen.com/sports/368522041.html?

This was the second bronze medal in a row for this team as the age grouping changed from U14 last year to U15 this year.

Cowichan Girls Lacrosse Drop In Sessions
Cowichan Girls Lacrosse Flyer 2015.pdf (448.46 K)
We have started up Drop In Female Lacrosse sessions in the South Cowichan area at Shawnigan Lake Community Centre once a week.  The dates are alternating Thursdays and Sundays to accommodate other programming.  So far we have had all women come out and it has been a lot of fun.  Some are former field lacrosse players who are loving the mesh sticks, some are friends of friends who are fresh to the game all together.
The goal is to provide lacrosse opportunities to girls of all ages, and we hope to see some young girls out as well. In the new year depending on interest we will look to split the time and go for an hour with young girls and an hour for women. (Seeing as women seem to be the one's looking for more so far).  We will be facilitating introductory lacrosse in some schools in the South Cowichan area (via SD 79 Aboriginal Program). Hopefully this will strike up some interest, but wanted to send this poster out to those who might be interested or know of people interested as well.
The sessions are FREE and run from 7:00-8:00pm on the following dates:
Thurs Oct 22nd
Sun Nov 1st
Thurs Nov 5th
Sun Nov 15th
Thurs Nov 19th
Sun Nov 29th
Thurs Dec 3rd
Sun Dec 13th

In partnership with Cowichan Girls Field Lacrosse and CVRD we are looking into further sessions throughout the year in Duncan as well. If you would like further information please contact me anytime.
Live, love, lax,

U-16 and U-19 Team BC Tryouts

The following date and times have been set for the Island District Camp evaluations;

Sunday September 30th, 2012
U16 and U19
10:00am to 4:00pm
Chesterfield Sportsplex (Duncan, B.C.)

We are accepting applications for players, coaches, assistant coaches who would like to become involved with the program (http://bcla.centraldesktop.com/bcla/doc/2629953/w-YouthNationals)

I would like to ask everyone to forward this e-mail to any Club Administrator that you feel could distribute the enclosed information.

Team BC - Field Lacrosse is a program designed with two primary factors in mind. Primarily the objective of the program is to assemble and develop a U16 and U19 Team to compete successfully in the Canadian National Championships. Secondly, Team BC strives to give players some exposure to College and University Coaches for pursuit of Scholarships to attend Post Secondary Institutions in both the United States and in
Canada.

Both teams will compete in the National Field Lacrosse Championships which will be held over the Labour Day weekend in 2013. The U16 Team will attend a Scouting Tournament in the US during a fall month of 2013, dates to be finalized, likely in late October or early November. To be eligible for either Team BC - Field Lacrosse Program, players must be registered to play Field Lacrosse with the BC Lacrosse Association (BCLA) in the current year.

In the event players are away at College, University or Prep School and are unable to play Community Lacrosse, they may still register with the BCLA to ensure eligibility. In this case, players must still complete the Team BC - Field Lacrosse Program application form to be considered for either the U16 or U19 Team. These player application forms will be brought forward to the Team BC - Field Lacrosse Committee for evaluation and/or possible inclusion into the Program.

District Camps will be held in late September 2012 with the Main Camp being held on the October Thanksgiving Long Weekend. Players will selected shortly thereafter for the 2012-13 Field Lacrosse season.

Should you have any questions or comment, please contact me directly.

Regards,

Rey Comeault
BCLA Regional Coach - Team BC - Field Lacrosse

Playoff Results
This past weekend saw the Mid Island Lightning U-12's, 14's and 16 teams start their playoff runs in the hopes of making it to the Provincial Championships. Congratulations goes to the U-12's and U-14's on winning their semi final series and moving on to the island championships next weekend.  The U-14 match was an exciting series with the home team losing the first game to Pac Rim by two goals.  The U-14 Lightning team then regrouped, winning the second game by two goals, resulting in overtime to declare the winner.  In overtime, Mid Island came out strong, eventually winning the two game series and moving them to the Island Championships next weekend.  The U-16's competing in the Tier 1 division lost a close first game by two goals.  The second game, saw the home Mid Island team end with a tie against Vic Field 1.  The U-16's have one more chance at making it to Provincials as they will be playing a wildcard game against a lower mainland opponent on Feb 11 to fill the last U-16 Tier 1 spot at Provincials.  Good luck to all the teams.  Get the full story by clicking HERE

Association Wide Bottle Drive - Saturday September 10th

As lots of people have heard, our Association has a new look as we have re-designed our jerseys to be more representative of the spirit of our players and parents. Yes indeed, we have moved from DRAB to FAB!!

We have already ordered one full set which will be designated to one of our younger divisions. We would however, like to outfit the entire Association with new jerseys but given that this will cost approximately $5,500 for the remaining levels, we need everyone’s help. Therefore, ALL of our players and parents are urged to participate in:

AN ASSOCIATION WIDE BOTTLE DRIVE ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

It’s not too early to start collecting from your family, friends and neighbours etc!

Home base will be the Bottle Depot in Duncan. It would be great if everyone could show up at 10:00 am with a full load of returns so that the sorters can get started while the players go out for more loads. If you cannot make it, we will gladly accept cash donations. Please contact Paula Harris at pjh_29@hotmail.com if you are able to provide a vehicle for this fundraiser.
